Epstein–Mandelson Documents Send Shockwaves Through UK Politics

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has agreed to disclose how the governing Labour Party vetted Peter Mandelson before naming him the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States in December 2024. The decision follows fresh disclosures in the Jeffrey Epstein case that shed new light on the diplomat’s ties to the disgraced financier.

Recently released documents from the US Department of Justice’s Epstein investigation indicate that Mandelson kept in contact with Epstein even after the latter completed a 2008 sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor. More serious allegations now suggest that Mandelson may have accepted payments from Epstein and could have provided him with confidential, market-sensitive information that carried financial value.

Epstein died by suicide in prison in 2019 before he could stand trial in his second federal case, which included accusations of trafficking dozens of underage girls.

On Thursday, Starmer issued an apology to Epstein’s victims, saying he regretted appointing Mandelson as ambassador to Washington despite being aware of his past association with the disgraced financier.

“It had long been public knowledge that Mandelson knew Epstein, but none of us understood the extent or the darkness of that relationship,” Starmer said.

“I am sorry — sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people in positions of power let you down, and sorry for believing Mandelson’s assurances and appointing him.”

Who Is Peter Mandelson, and What Allegations Is He Facing?

Following the release on Friday of a fresh batch of Epstein-related documents — including email exchanges between Epstein and Mandelson — British media reported that the government suspects Mandelson may have improperly passed on market-sensitive information to the financier about 15 years ago.

The newly disclosed material is extensive, comprising more than 3 million pages of records, along with over 2,000 videos and around 180,000 images.

Mandelson, 72, had been a member of the House of Lords as a life peer until stepping down this week. A long-time Labour figure, he held senior cabinet roles under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown between 1997 and 2010. After Labour returned to power in 2024 following 14 years in opposition, he was appointed ambassador to the United States and assumed the role on February 10 last year.

He stepped down from the Labour Party on Sunday, saying he did not want the ongoing controversy to damage the party.

“I have been further linked this weekend to the understandable furore surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, and I feel regretful and sorry about this,” Mandelson wrote in a letter cited by British media.

“While doing this, I do not wish to cause further embarrassment to the Labour Party, and I am therefore stepping down from membership of the party.”

The alleged sharing of sensitive information is said to have occurred in 2009, when Mandelson was serving as the UK’s business secretary in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.

This is not the first time his association with Epstein has caused controversy. On September 11, the UK government dismissed Mandelson from his post as ambassador to the United States following the emergence of emails between the two men, according to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

On Tuesday, British police opened a criminal investigation into Mandelson over suspected misconduct in public office linked to his relationship with Epstein. In the UK, that offence carries a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Apart from his removal as ambassador, Mandelson had previously resigned from ministerial roles twice — in 1998 and again in 2001 — amid separate allegations of misconduct.

Jeffrey Epstein: Who Was He?

Epstein was a wealthy financier from New York who moved in elite social circles, frequently associating with prominent celebrities and political figures.

Investigations by law enforcement suggested he may have abused hundreds of girls throughout his career. He was arrested in 2019 on federal charges tied to the alleged exploitation of underage victims spanning roughly two decades. Still, he died in custody before the case could go to trial.

Earlier allegations dated back to 2005, when a 14-year-old girl accused him of sexual assault, prompting her parents to report the case to police. In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to charges of soliciting prostitution, including from a minor, in a case involving a single victim.

He served 13 months in jail under a work-release arrangement that allowed him to leave the facility during the day and return at night.

Authorities in Manhattan also pursued charges against his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, as an alleged accomplice in the abuse network. She was convicted in 2021 and, the following year, received a 20-year prison sentence, which she is currently serving.

Inside Peter Mandelson’s Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein

When Mandelson was dismissed as ambassador to the US in September, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) stated:

“In light of additional information contained in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the prime minister has instructed the foreign secretary to withdraw him from his ambassadorial post.

“These emails reveal that the nature and extent of Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein were significantly different from what was understood at the time of his appointment.”

The emails, published by the UK’s Sun newspaper in September, show Mandelson urging Epstein to “fight for early release” shortly before Epstein began serving his 2008 sentence.

“I think the world of you,” Mandelson wrote to Epstein before his imprisonment.

“I can still barely understand it. It just could not happen in Britain,” he added. “You have to be incredibly resilient, fight for early release, and be philosophical about it as much as you can.”

The most recent release of the Epstein files confirms that Mandelson maintained his friendship with Epstein for a period even after the financier had been convicted of sex crimes.

Key Revelations From the Latest Epstein Files

Bank records from 2003 to 2004 show that Epstein allegedly made three payments totalling $75,000 to accounts linked to Peter Mandelson or his partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. Mandelson has stated he does not recall receiving these funds and has promised to verify the authenticity of the documents.

The records also indicate that in 2009, Epstein transferred £10,000 ($13,607 at the time, roughly $20,419 today, accounting for inflation) to da Silva to cover an osteopathy course. Commenting on this, Mandelson told The Times of London this week: “In retrospect, it was clearly a lapse in our collective judgement for Reinaldo to accept this offer.”

The latest tranche of US Justice Department files further illustrates the close relationship between Mandelson and Epstein. In October 2009, Epstein emailed Mandelson with a remark about marrying Princess Beatrice, referencing the daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who had been stripped of his royal titles over his links to Epstein and allegations of sexually abusing Virginia Giuffre. Epstein added, “Does that make it incest? How exciting.”

Other emails show ongoing personal exchanges. In 2010, Epstein’s long-term assistant, Lesley Groff, noted Mandelson’s holiday plans in an email. In 2013, Epstein contacted Mandelson while he was visiting St. Petersburg, Russia. Mandelson described the city as “a rave,” to which Epstein asked if it was “for gays,” and Mandelson replied, “Er no, tastey [sic] models and dancing.”

The documents also suggest Mandelson may have shared sensitive financial information with Epstein. On May 9, 2010, Mandelson emailed, “Sources tell me 500 b euro bailout, almost complete [sic],” the day before European governments approved a €500-billion bank bailout following the global financial crisis.

Later that month, Mandelson emailed Epstein, “Finally got him to go today,” reportedly referring to former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Epstein responded: “I have faith that the value of some chapters in your book should now increase.” Hours after the exchange, Brown announced his resignation.

What Did Prime Minister Starmer Say?

Facing growing pressure from both opposition figures and members of his own party, Starmer agreed this week to disclose details about the process that led to Mandelson’s 2024 appointment as ambassador.

During a Wednesday Q&A session in the House of Commons, dominated by the Epstein revelations, Starmer acknowledged that he was aware of Mandelson’s friendship with Epstein but said Mandelson had “lied repeatedly to my team when asked about his relationship with Epstein before and during his tenure as ambassador.”

“Mandelson betrayed our country, our parliament, and my party,” Starmer said. “I regret appointing him. If I had known then what I know now, he would never have been anywhere near government.”

He confirmed that he would release “all of the material,” except documents that could compromise national security, international relations, or the ongoing police investigation into Mandelson.

According to a Downing Street summary of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer described himself as “appalled by the information” regarding Mandelson and expressed concern that more revelations could emerge.

He also ordered the civil service to carry out an “urgent” review of all Mandelson’s contacts with Epstein while he held government positions.

“The alleged passing on of emails containing highly sensitive government business was disgraceful,” Starmer added, noting that he was not yet “reassured that the totality of information had yet emerged.”

What Impact Could This Have on Starmer?

Members of Parliament have voiced strong criticism and urged Starmer to consider stepping down.

Conservative MP Luke Evans said, “At the end of the day, he [Starmer] made the decision to appoint Mandelson to the ambassador role, so he must clarify his decision-making process.”

Alex Burghart, shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, added, “There is no doubt the prime minister’s judgement is under intense scrutiny right now. It is increasingly difficult to see how we can rely on his decisions in the future.”

Conservative MP Graham Stuart stated, “The fact is he appointed someone who had already violated the Nolan Principles before taking the post and continued to do so afterwards. That makes the prime minister’s position untenable.”

The Nolan Principles set ethical standards for public office holders in the UK.

Conservative MP Esther McVey also criticised Starmer, saying, “Today marks the crumbling of Starmer. His poor judgement is damaging both the country and the Labour Party.”

How Was Mandelson Approved as UK Ambassador to the US?

In September, when questioned by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch in the House of Commons, Starmer insisted that “full due process was gone through” regarding Mandelson’s ambassadorial appointment.

Mandelson’s association with Epstein, who reportedly called him “Petie,” had been publicly known for years.

However, The Times of London reported that Starmer had received only a two-page vetting note from the Cabinet Office’s propriety and ethics team concerning Mandelson’s nomination.

The note revealed that Mandelson had stayed at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse while Epstein was in prison in 2009, and it included a photograph of the two men together.

This suggested that by late 2024, the UK government possessed documentation confirming that Mandelson had maintained close ties to Epstein even after the financier’s 2008 conviction.
