NASA Moon Rocket Hydrogen Leak: Resumes Countdown After Repairs

NASA has restarted a critical practice countdown after repairing a NASA Moon Rocket Hydrogen Leak that previously delayed its first crewed lunar mission in decades. The fueling issue pushed the planned launch timeline into March.

Two weeks earlier, the initial test was halted when liquid hydrogen leaks were detected—similar to the problems that disrupted the agency’s first uncrewed Artemis flight three years ago.

Repairs Completed at Kennedy Launch Pad

Engineers replaced two faulty seals and a clogged filter at the Kennedy Space Center launch pad, where the giant rocket stands ready. With the repairs complete, launch teams resumed the countdown for a two-day fueling test.

The test is scheduled to culminate on Thursday with a full propellant load into the rocket’s tanks. The four astronauts of the Artemis II mission will observe the dress rehearsal remotely.

Mission Will Circle the Moon’s Far Side

The nearly 10-day Artemis II flight will send astronauts past the Moon and around its far side before returning directly to Earth. The primary objective is to test the spacecraft’s life-support systems and other critical components.

Launch Depends on Leak-Free Test

A successful fueling demonstration without further hydrogen issues is required before NASA sets a final launch date. The earliest possible liftoff for the Space Launch System is March 6, though officials said extra time is needed to analyze test results.

First Crewed Moon Mission Since Apollo

If successful, Artemis II will mark the first time astronauts have traveled toward the Moon since the Apollo program ended in 1972. Unlike Apollo, the Artemis program aims to explore the Moon’s south polar region and support longer-term human presence on the lunar surface.
